Many wedding cakes are multi-tiered with some very elaborate decorations. It takes a lot of time to make such a cake. You should know that it will be the focus of everybody present at the wedding reception. Therefore, to know exactly when you should place an order for the cake, there are a few things you should know.
Initial inquiry. Once you have decided which baker is going to make your wedding cake, you should go over the details, including any unique decorations you might want to be added to it. It can typically take about two to three days for you to get the initial quote.
Design phase. You should know that every design of the wedding cake has its price. Therefore, it is advisable that you go for a design that you can afford, without affecting the wedding budget. You should have a clear idea of it so that the baker can give you an accurate price. The experienced baker can also guide you in settling for a particular decoration. This stage can consume some time, especially if you have no clear idea of the design you want.
Cake tasting. Before going ahead to prepare the wedding cake, the baker should offer you a complimentary cake tasting opportunity. This is an opportunity for you to taste various flavors so that you can make the final decision. You should receive a completed order from your baker with details of the final design and flavors that you have chosen within a week. Usually, the baker can give you a few days to review the details and make changes, if necessary.
Pay deposit and place the order. If you are happy with the details, the next step is to pay a deposit and place the order. After this period, the baker will get to work, and communication between you and the baker will be limited. However, you can always communicate with them when necessary.
Order confirmation. Most bakers usually call in to confirm the order six weeks before the wedding. This gives you an opportunity to review the details and make changes if you need to. This is also the time you will receive the invoice for the final bill. In most cases, you will be required to clear the final bill four weeks before the wedding.
Venue confirmation and cake delivery. The baker should contact you two weeks before the wedding, to confirm the venue as well as the delivery. Typically they will start baking the cake 3-4 days before the wedding. The reason for that is to ensure that it will be fresh on the wedding day. The whole process of ordering the cake can take 3-6 months. Therefore, it is advisable to order it at least three months before the wedding.
